Wrinkles and facial lines result from ageing, muscle activity and genetic predisposition. In addition, excessive sun exposure, alcohol consumption, emotional and hormonal influences and smoking can also increase the likelihood of wrinkles.
They all contain Botulinum Toxin A and have been tested to be equally effective and safe. The procedure is prescription only and should only be administered by highly trained doctors, dentists or nurses.
The effect normally lasts for up to three months. This means it is reversible and so the effect will automatically disappear once the toxin wears off. A micro thin, short needle is used to inject very superficially under the skin into the muscle.
Botulinum Toxin A has been used on over one million patients around the world for over 15 years, with very few side-effects or complications. The horror stories seem totally exaggerated and most often Botox is blamed for other treatments, such has fillers, that have gone wrong. Botox is one of the easiest, least painful and safest treatments in the aesthetic industry.
Botox Treatment Options
After an initial consultation, assessing your medical health and which muscles ideally should be treated, The Norup Clinic may apply an anaesthetic cream and then a number of micro-injections are performed. The procedure should last no more than 15 minutes.
Discomfort is extremely minimal and very brief. There may be minor redness or swelling at the injection site, which subsides within minutes. You will be able to go home and return to your daily activities immediately after your treatment is completed. Very occasionally there may be a minor localised bruising that will last a few days. It can usually be covered with makeup. Some undesired effects can occur due to Botulinum Toxin dispersing to the wrong muscle group but that is only temporary.
Botox has been used in millions of patients over the last 15 years. It is made in a laboratory environment, highly purified and administered in tiny quantities. It has an excellent safety profile.
The treatment can take up to two weeks to take full effect but mostly it will start taking effect after a couple of days. A "top-up" or adjustment is generally recommended within two weeks. The treatment lasts three to four months at which point a new procedure can be performed.
Some patients may experience less effect or find that it lasts for a shorter time depending on their individual metabolism. Smoking and regular exercise can affect the durability.
