The benefits of visiting a BCAM registered practitioner
There are often stories in the news and media about the negative impact of some aesthetics treatments. Indeed some are true horror stories occasionally leading to debilitating side effects – or in some cases death. At the Norup Clinic, we felt it was important to address the concerns and look at the context.
THE PERILS OF COSMETIC TOURISM
Recently in the press there has been much reporting of people travelling abroad for aesthetics treatments. From Turkey Teeth to the Brazilian Bum Lift, some people are choosing to travel abroad as prices can be cheaper. However no matter how cheap these treatments may be, this does not take into account:
- Levels of qualifications of practitioners
- Standards of practice and legal requirements
- Overall safety and hygiene
- The risks and how to manage negative outcomes
REGULATIONS IN THE UK
In the UK, the aesthetics sector is regulated by BCAM, the British College of Aesthetics Medicine, a registered charity that promotes safe and ethical aesthetics practices. All members must meet stringent rules and be a member of either the General Medical Council (GMC) or General Dental Council (GDC).
The British College of Aesthetic Medicine (BCAM) exists to advance safe and ethical aesthetic medicine for the benefit of medical practitioners and members of the public.
This ensures that if you visit a BCAM registered practitioner in the UK, they have been vetted and approved under UK standards. Overseas standards and safety levels differ, and in some countries are unregulated. When you visit these practitioners, you are potentially putting yourself at risk with no recourse.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THINGS GO WRONG?
If things go wrong, there is no guarantee of an NHS organisation to come to your aid. We are fortunate in the UK to have an exemplary (if overstretched) free medical service available in emergencies. This does not apply abroad and either extensive travel and medical insurance is required before travelling, or you may find yourself in medical distress without hope of rescue. Patients have been left struggling in hotels with only visiting Doctors to attend to them periodically. Being at distance also means that relatives cannot easily reach your bedside to provide support. The outcomes can be very serious indeed.
THE NORUP CLINC’S QUALITY OF CARE
At The Norup Clinic, Dr Mette Norup is registered with GDC, and BCAM and has over 30 years’experience in the field of first dental surgery and later aesthetics procedures. At her aesthetics clinic in Esher, Surrey, she does not undertake surgical procedures but prefers to approach aesthetics using minimally invasive methods to deliver outstanding yet natural-looking results.
Notably, a recent BCAM report illustrated the decreasing level of risk associated with experienced practitioners with more than 20 years’ experience – Dr Norup among them.

BCAM graph illustrates decreasing level of risk associated with practitioners who have been practicing for more than 20 years.
YOU ARE IN SAFE HANDS
Dr Norup ensures that The Norup Clinic follows high standards of practice, patient care, cleaning and hygiene and that following any treatments e.g. injectables, she is available for consultation if there any side effects or concerns.
To date, Dr Norup has a consistently high level of patient satisfaction with very few post-treatment issues and very positive feedback. Many new clients are introduced to the clinic via referral from other happy patients. The Team are constantly checking and monitoring performance via customer satisfaction surveys and in-clinic conversations.
We are confident that our standards are exceptional and back this up with the necessary accreditations and regulations.
