Whether you’re using diet medication or not, one of the most common problems reported with rapid or significant weight loss is loss of volume to the face. This is caused by the loss of fat, which is ideal around the body, but not so welcome on the face. This syndrome, often referred to as ‘diet face’ or ‘Ozempic face’ causes the face to appear noticeably thinner.
New research has revealed that fat cells play an incredibly important role. Weight loss and ageing both result in damage not only to the fat cells, but also to the amount of collagen and elastin in the skin dermis. Fat cells in the skin have highly regenerative properties and hold the highest level of stem cells in the body. Therefore, fat cell damage not only results in diminished volume and sagging but also loss of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid (HA) too.
Loss of volume and structure
As a result of fat loss, you often see an increase in the visibility of the nasolabial line (nose to lip lines), marionette lines (mouth to chin), and accordion lines (lines radiating across the cheeks). Eyes and cheeks may look hollow, and the reduction in the structural fat pads in the face can lead to facial sagging. Looser skin along the jawline may give a jowly appearance and can cause slackening of the skin under the chin.
